Sabinsa’s Curcumin C3 Complex®, the most clinically studied curcumin ingredient in the world, continues to engage the attention of researchers seeking to pinpoint additional benefits of this popular branded ingredient. Two recently published clinical trials explored the uses of C3 Complex® to support healthy aging.
The first study, Effects of Curcumin C3 Complex® on Physical Function in Moderately Functioning Older Adults with Low-Grade Inflammation — A Pilot Trial published in the Journal of Frailty & Aging, explored the effects of C3 Complex® for improving physical function and muscle strength in older adults. It was found that C3 Complex® 1000 mg/day along with Sabinsa’s bioavailability enhancer BioPerine® increased knee extension and flexion peak torque compared to placebo group. Larger improvement in physical function and lower-limb muscle strength improvement is said to be the cause for this beneficial effect of C3 Complex®. Reduced muscle strength is dependent on impaired mitochondrial function, systemic inflammation and oxidative stress. The authors hypothesize that muscle strength improvements may be related to the anti-inflammatory effects of C3 Complex®. No treatment related side effects were reported in this clinical trial, which is especially relevant considering the participants average age (79.4 years).
The second paper, an Australian/New Zealand study, Bioactive Yoghurt Containing Curcumin and Chlorogenic Acid Reduces Inflammation in Postmenopausal Women, was published in the journal Nutrients. The decrease of estrogen in menopause leads to increased body mass index, elevated systemic inflammation, and metabolic disturbances. In this randomized crossover study, with a minimum one week washout period, overweight or obese postmenopausal women were given bioactive yoghurt containing C3 Complex® and chlorogenic acid. The level of inflammatory marker TNFα levels came down immediately after consumption of C3 Complex®/chlorogenic acid containing yoghurt, showing the acute nature of the effect. TNFα may be involved as a low-grade stimulus of osteoporosis and metabolic dysfunctions arising out of estrogen deficiency. The authors hypothesize that higher amount of the actives in the functional food could have more pronounced effects.
“The aging population needs supplements to help them stay healthy and socially active,” remarked Dr. Muhammed Majeed, the Founder and Chairman of Sabinsa Corporation. “It is gratifying to see benefits of C3 Complex® identified by these studies showing it may specifically support the health of older people.”
